HBK Engineering is seeking a Senior Designer. This position performs CADD Design duties primarily in AutoCAD and MicroStation.  The selected Senior Designer will perform a wide range of design tasks from basic to complex such as existing utility plan development, utility and electrical designs for construction, report preparation, and site inspection. This position will also be responsible for coordinating with engineers, other technicians and/or administrative staff.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Within the HBK Organization, a Senior Design Specialist’s role is the delivery and execution of project work.
  • A Senior Design Specialist is responsible for directing and coordinating technical activities, related to project execution and delivery. The Senior Design Specialist’s role requires a thorough understanding of both the technical and financial aspects of HBK’s work.
  • A Senior Design Specialist is required to be adequately technically competent to train and monitor team members in the performance of their duties.
  • Independently applies extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering design principles and practices to solve complex project challenges.
  • Works on a major project or several projects of moderate scope with complex features.
  • Perform quality control reviews of engineering designs under the oversight of professional engineering staff.
  • Leads the development and implementation of new techniques, improved processes, materials, or products that enhance project outcomes.
  • Assists in the training and mentoring of team members within their teams.
  • Completion of Timesheets in a timely (daily) and accurate manner.
  • Obtain an in-depth understanding of their reporting manager’s expectations and project team structure.
  • Measure personal performance and provide regular feedback and performance indicators to your reporting manager. Provides feedback and performance indicators to their reporting manager.
  • Sets goals with their reporting manager for professional development and monitoring progress towards these goals for self.
  • Assists their reporting managers by bringing attention to issues or potential issues.
  • Addresses concerns that may affect safety, budget, deadlines, or clients adversely.
  • Establishes positive relations within the project team(s) and with supporting groups within the company.
  • Take a leadership role in company-sponsored events, HBK Impact programs, and initiatives that promote a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for all employees.
  • Acts as a role model / set the example of positive performance for team members.
  • Assists in the training and mentoring of team members within their teams.
  • Drives continuous improvement and innovation across the organization.

  • May advise in the development of Project Proposals / RFP responses.
  • Anticipates technical and constructability project challenges and works to minimize downstream project risk.
  • Monitors that all work is performed under contract, or gain approval from their reporting Manager for work performed out of standard contract sequence
  • Endeavors to meet diversity goals
  • Interface with clients to discuss a wide range of engineering and project management topics including project scope, schedule, budget, and invoices.
  • Prepare reports and studies meeting client requirements that present technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Communicate complex engineering design matters to internal project management, engineering leadership, and field resources.
  • Independently manage time and schedule to achieve project milestones.
  • Travel as needed, typically <25%.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience.
  • 10 years of ComEd planning experience.
  • US driver’s license.
  • US work authorization.
  • An ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to come up to speed quickly on in-process projects and hit the ground running.
  • The persistence to see projects through to completion.
  • Adaptable to change in a dynamic team environment.

Essential skills and experience

  • Familiar with SRS, SCATA etc. ComEd systems.
  • Ability to review designs to compare Project Diagrams (PD).
  • Ability to develop construction sequencing.
  • Ability to identify isolation points to safely execute construction.
  • Ability to coordinate with construction, testing, and the OCC to ensure alignment of resource and tasks.
  • Ability to create MANTIS tickets.
  • Ability to review SCADA and OMS.
  • Ability to create and review switching requests.
  • Ability to create and review clearance orders and administrate orders.
  • Ability to identify, plan and provide support to the utility to coordinate outages with their customers.
  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering design techniques and procedures.
  • Possesses advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of client standards, guidelines, systems, and equipment. Demonstrates an understanding of national standards and guidelines.
  • Understanding of safe work practices, both in office and field.
  • Understanding of employee policies and appropriate office conduct.
  • Represents the organization in communications and conferences pertaining to broad-aspects of engineering assignments.
  • Strong computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong proficiency in Engineering Design Programs (i.e. AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.).
  • Ability to manage a variety of tasks in a highly organized manner within a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience leading engineering design for projects and delegating tasks to team members.
  • Ability to lead the execution of project work and resolve issues in a collaborative team environment.
  • Attention to detail, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving.
  • Understands individual project scopes and deliverable commitments.
  • Understands project areas of risk.
  • Understands vendor / subcontractor processes and contracts.
  • Understands Standard Hourly Rates, Unit Rate, Fixed Fee and Labor Rate Multipliers.
  • Understands the status of charges, billable, unbillable.
  • Training and mentoring of entry- and mid-level staff.
  • Understanding of remote communication software.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a related technical field. 
  • Related technical certificates of achievement in CADD and related software platforms.
