GIS Technician
HBK Engineering is seeking a GIS Technician in Chicago, IL. The GIS Technician will support utility and telecom engineering projects by working with and maintaining spatial data. This includes creating and updating maps, organizing data, converting files, and helping the project team visualize infrastructure in a clear, accurate way. The role is hands-on and requires strong attention to detail, especially when working with maps and location data

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Work closely with a project team of engineers, designers, and field staff to support the design, modification, and construction of utility systems
- Use ArcGIS Pro to create, edit, and maintain spatial data and mapping products for utility and telecom distribution projects
- Support CAD-to-GIS conversions, including overlay map creation and spatial database updates
- Generate and manage KMZ files and other spatial exports for internal and client use
- Review engineering plan sets to identify potential conflicts with our client’s existing infrastructure; communicate findings to the design team
- Assist in the design and maintenance of GIS databases, including geographic and topographic data
- Enter GPS data, legal descriptions, and survey notes into GIS to build accurate maps and land-based representations
- Check and update map layers for accuracy, consistency, and inclusion of new or revised information
- Create hard copy and digital map products, determining appropriate scales, line styles, and symbology
- Monitor GIS data quality and assist with troubleshooting or corrective actions as needed
- Use aerial imagery and supporting data to interpret infrastructure locations and assess field conditions
- Digitize and maintain records of electric or telecom utility as-built drawings and construction documentation
- Respond to internal requests for custom maps, data queries, and basic spatial analysis
- Communicate clearly with clients and municipalities to clarify project information, address data issues, and support permit or design reviews
Required Skills:
- High school diploma or GED. In lieu of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree, relevant certification in GIS and/or 2+ years of GIS experience
- Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, including editing, map creation, and data entry
- Familiarity with GIS data concepts such as shapefiles, feature classes, spatial reference systems, and basic attribute editing
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when working with maps and datasets
- Clear verbal and written communication skills, especially for documenting findings and coordinating with project teams
- Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, designers, field staff, and occasionally clients, city contacts, and other stakeholders
- Comfortable navigating aerial imagery, street view tools, and interpreting topographic features
- Self-motivated and organized, with strong time management and the ability to meet deadlines
Preferred Skills:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related field
- Experience working with KMZ/KML files and Google Earth
- Exposure to CAD-to-GIS workflows, such as converting utility plans into GIS data
- Experience in the telecom or utility industries, particularly related to aerial or underground infrastructure
- Experience performing QA/QC on spatial data or identifying mapping errors
- Ability to read and understand civil engineering plan sets
- AutoCAD experience
- Familiarity with Python and/or SQL
- Utility experience in the Chicago metro area
- The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and the potential to participate in our discretionary annual incentive bonus program.

Pay: $24-$28 per hour commensurate with experience.
